How everything started
Dimitris Hatzimichalis is the founder and Managing Director of Domaine Hatzimichalis, located in Atalanti Valley of Central Greece. At the age of 19, Dimitris made his first wine in his house yard and later continued his passion with functioning a small wine press in the premises of his family business and studying the history of wine.
His love for vine and wine culture, inspired him to buy his first 9 hectares in Atalanti Valley in 1973. The selection of this land was based on the unique microclimate that exists in the area. The cool breezes of Mount Parnassus and the Sea aura of the Eubean gulf meet and form an ideal ecosystem for the growing of wine grape vines, acting like a natural air-conditioning. These characteristics along with the viticulture tradition of Atalanti, convinced him to invest in this land and fulfill his dreams.
The story behind the turkey..
As the first years were not easy, Dimitris created a farm to breed turkeys, which helped support the vineyard’s expenses. The nestling turkeys were imported from Canada in early September and were bred for traditional Christmas table. Knowing the care needed for the vineyards to be fruitful, Dimitris invested all the money he earned from selling his turkeys. The turkey has been our distinct logo ever since, and is proudly displayed on all our wine labels.
From the beginning, Dimitris laid the foundation for a well-structured business. After various intensive studies, he decided on the most ideal varieties which he would cultivate in his vineyards. He invested in the infrastructure with the best machines and experienced staff for passionate, successful wine production. Furthermore, since his first harvest in 1974, the harvest is performed by the same experienced women in addition to new entries for them to train year after year: this was a deliberate choice. Greek women are known to be caring, patient and tender in everything that they do; therefore, they are the persons Domaine Hatzimichalis trusts to continue the tradition of hard work, always certain that they will take care of the vineyards with the same motherly care they show their children.
It was the early 80’s when a batch of 1,000 bottles of high quality Cabernet Sauvignon astounded the Greek wine industry. Just a decade later, the quality of the Domaine Hatzimichalis wines was recognized globally, earning a number of international awards in Brussels and New York. This recognition was not only with the red wines, but also with the white wines; the blend of the Greek varieties Assyrtiko and Robola leading the way. In addition, Domaine Hatzimichalis continues to improve, respecting Dimitris’ original vision for the company: the creation of authentic wines supporting local cultural and values.
Domaine Hatzimichalis is a family-owned wine-growing business run by its founder, Dimitris L. Hatzimichalis, and his two sons, Leonidas and Panagiotis. The two young men are passionately contributing to the family business and are extremely enthusiastic about keeping the tradition of the winery while working to expand it worldwide.
